Among some of the most popular used plants utilized in gardens today is the coleus canina. The beautiful leafy plant is one that you have problem seen without realizing or without knowing its full potential. From relatively easy coleus canina care to the plants inherent and intriguing properties, the following explains more about why this plant is so popular and why coleus canina seeds are often sold out of home improvement and gardening store shelves.

Popularity Explained

Coleus canina are popular plants in moderately climactic gardens throughout the world, especially in the United States and in the United Kingdom . The leaves of this plant are neutral to a garden making it the perfect edition as it will not distract from other plants nearby. The plants leaves can come in a wide variety of colors, from reddish hues to the popular green, but do not contain the large petals of some of the more physically appealing flowered plants. This allows the hues to be more subdued and mix into the garden well.  As a result, coleus caninas means that it can complement several different flowery plant varieties without detracting from their beauty with a competitive color. Further, coleus canina seeds are often utilized in the bedding and planting of a garden because of the physical repelling properties that are engrained within. Coleus caninas are also known as cat repellent plants because of their inherent abilities to keep cats and dogs away from a garden. Especially in areas where these animals may roam freely, such as on a farm or in a neighborhood with some inquisitive domesticates, these cat repellent plants can be a perfect edition to a garden.

Care For Coleus

If you are considering planting any plant or flower in your garden or your yard, it is important to first assess the care that it will take to allow these plants to thrive. When it comes to coleus canina care, the answer is very little. Coleus canina seeds can be planted in soil where they will tend to thrive on their own, without much intervention. The soil, though, will need to be well-drained in order for this growth to occur. It should also be noticed that some maintenance in the way of oversight is required for this plant. The reason is that coleus can grow and expand rapidly throughout a venue. If you are not a fan of the creeping or wandering plant variety, this may not be the plant for you. However, if you enjoy the idea of seeing a space begin to fill with the beauty of colorful leaved plants, or your garden needs this, consider coleus plants as a potential option for you.

I love this plant! I bought a 4″ pot last year and just put it on top of another so I could keep over winter.
it took root and when spring came I moved outside. And now it fills the bigger 12″ pot and it is blooming.
This sounds crazy, but I also like the smell. I have a lot of fun having friends and family smell it. They all agree. It smells like skunk.

    Hi Tim,
Unfortunately it’s quiet hard to find nowadays Coleus Canina seeds in sale. What I would advice, is to buy a mature or a young plant, and get the plugs form it.
    here is one source
    and here is another
I think the problem is due to the plant being not such a big commercial success, and big brands stopped carrying the seeds.
I would suggest also considering an electronic sound repellent or better, a motion activated water repellent. They are harmless to the animals and the result of this gadgets are pretty good.
    Cheers.
